How To Change Your Hvac Furnace Filter

How To Change Your Hvac Furnace Filter
First, remove any filter that is still in your furnace. Take note of the size filter. The size of the filter will look something like this: "14x25x1".
You can get a good replacement filter for anywhere from $5 up to $20 at a big-box or home improvement store. You may also find filters at your local grocery store in smaller sizes. However, prices at grocery stores will be more expensive than elsewhere.
MERV ratings are on a scale from 1 to 16 for most residential uses, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Higher MERV ratings mean that the filter traps more particles.
After you have your filter installed, it's time to remove the old one from the machine and install the new one. We've got a DIY video here to guide you through the process.
Do I need to have my ducts cleaned?
Due to growing concerns about indoor air quality, it's easy to convince homeowners that their ducts need cleaning. But unless ducts are really dirty, there's no reason to clean them. The EPA takes a similar stance on the issue, recommending cleaning only if the ducts and HVAC unit are contaminated.
Duct cleaning can be done correctly, but not as a regular maintenance task. Your HVAC and ducts don't have to be cleaned except:
- Remodeling: Your ductwork cleaning might need cleaning if your house has undergone significant renovations, such as asbestos removal or lead paint removal. Ductwork should always be sealed during renovations. However, if not done properly, hazardous dust and debris could build up.
- Animals: If there's evidence of animal infestation or nesting in your ducts or HVAC system, have the animals removed then clean the ductwork and HVAC unit.
- Mold: Ductwork should be cleaned if there are visible signs of mold growth.
- After the registers are cleaned and vacuumed, any contaminants, such as pet hair or debris, may be released through the ducts. The ducts might need cleaning.
- You may need to have your HVAC system cleaned if someone is suffering from an undiagnosed allergy.
